AIMS: 

- introduce children to different cultures and traditions through nursery rhymes from different countries and different regions

- support immigrant parents’ use of their mother tongue or dialects with their children

- promote children’s knowledge of nursery rhymes 

- enhance the languages of origin and dialects at school

- promote the development of language in the language of origin, dialects and the language of instruction

 

How to:

Parents upload audio files of traditional nursery rhymes from their countries of origin, accompanied by the text of the rhyme, a drawing (made by the child) or an image, in order to create a "digital postcard".

The translation of the text from language of origin can be carried out depending on th available resources (by the parent who offered the original text, with the help of their son or daughter, or by other parents in the class or in the school that speak the same language).

The rhymes can then be grouped according to theme (food, atmospheric phenomena, moments of the day, games ...) to create digital (on-line) or paper (es. using a binder) books. Children can choose which ones to listen to, learn by heart, recite alone or together at different times of the day.

 

Connections to the curriculum:

The activity can be linked to different moments and rituals during the school day and/or the themes and projects carried out with children during the year.

Parents can be invited to school to teach the children nursery rhymes. If the parents agree, these events can be filmed and the videos put on the platform, so children can watch them. This may also encourage other parents to partecipate.

Teachers can also make videos in which nursery rhymes are recited by teachers, children, teachers and children together, so parents can learn them.
