Interview with my parents (age range: 7+)

 

Aims: 

  • to give visibility to multilingualism;
  • to increase the active participation of children
  • to promote families' involvement.

Procedure:

  • Even in continuity with the activity Making a research in the classroom: interviewing each other,  teachers and children can decide to interview the parents (other relatives at home)to collect information regarding the parents’ (granparents’, uncles’...) linguistic biographies and repertories.

Example of questions (questions can be invented by children, expressing what is relevant from their point of view...)

  • What are all the languages that you know?  ( you can listen, speak, write and read)
  • How did you learn it? With whom?
  • What is your mother tongue? 
  • What language or languages do/did you speak in your family? (with  your parents, siblings, grandparents...)? ...with you schoolmates at school? ...with your friends out of the school? (in the park, in the community, when you make sport or other activities…)
  • Make a parade: what is the most important language among the ones you know?  Which is your favorite one?  Which do you like less? Would you like to learn a new language? Which ones?

  •  They can also create a language portrait of the family (including: siblings, parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles), in a short e-book, introducing each family member, the country/region she/he comes from, and what languages he/she speaks;
      • In different moments of the day (during breakfast, lunch, dinner, while watching tv…)
      • When they celebrate a festivity
      • When they pray
      • When they are upset or they are happy or…
      • When they are at the park 
      • When we have hosts
      • When they go to buy some food
      • When they meet family friends  
  • In the space of a couple of weeks, children can take pictures (or short video clips) of family members and of different moments of their family life and insert captions (recorded or written), describing the required information. In the case of video clips, they can ask their relatives to speak and introduce themselves.
  • Once these materials have been collected, pupils can create an e-book that can be presented to their classmates. The e-book can be in more than one language and it can be easily shared with members of the family who might be far away in the family’s country of origin.

Materials and digital tools:

Photos, descriptions and audio/video-recordings could be added to a Forum.
