Observation prompts

If you haven’t done it before, observe your children in relation to the topics of languages and plurilingualism as a starting point to build learning and educational experience.

Observe if children:

  • make conversations on home languages or speaking multiple languages with other children at school and listen what they say, what is relevant for them;
  • use their mother tongue at school making conversation with children speaking the same language,
  • help a newly or recently arrived child translating words to her/him,
  • feel embarrassed or proud to talk in and about their home languages

To allow for spontaneous conversations during the daily life at school, it can be of help to indirectly solicit them:

  • making visible in the classroom of books or signs in different languages (spaces and materials send many messages!);
  • to talk about your own experience with languages;
  • to read an article or a tale on a multilingual character/celebrity...
